Does Insurance Cover Orthodontic Treatment?

05/20/2026 | Treatment | 8

One of the first questions many families ask before starting orthodontic treatment is whether insurance will help cover the cost. In many cases, the answer is yes—but orthodontic benefits can vary significantly depending on your dental insurance plan.

At Ann Arbor Orthodontics, we help patients understand their orthodontic benefits before treatment begins so there are no surprises along the way.

Every Insurance Plan Is Different

Unlike routine dental care, orthodontic benefits can vary from one insurance policy to another. Some plans provide generous orthodontic coverage, while others offer limited benefits or may not include orthodontics at all.

Coverage often depends on factors such as:

  • Your specific dental insurance plan
  • Whether orthodontic benefits are included
  • The patient's age
  • Your lifetime orthodontic benefit

Reviewing your individual policy is the best way to understand exactly what is covered.

Does Insurance Cover Invisalign?

Many insurance plans that cover traditional braces also provide benefits for Invisalign®. In most situations, the orthodontic benefit is the same regardless of which treatment option you choose.

During your consultation, we'll verify your benefits and explain how your insurance applies to the recommended treatment.

Understanding Orthodontic Benefits

Many orthodontic insurance plans include a Lifetime Maximum Benefit, meaning the insurance company will contribute up to a certain dollar amount toward orthodontic treatment over a patient's lifetime. Unlike regular dental benefits that often renew each year, orthodontic lifetime benefits are typically used only once.

It's also important to know that orthodontic benefits are usually paid throughout the course of treatment rather than in one lump sum. If your insurance changes while treatment is in progress, your remaining benefits may depend on your new insurance plan and whether it covers orthodontic treatment already underway.

How Orthodontic Insurance Pays

One of the biggest surprises for many families is that orthodontic insurance usually doesn't pay the entire benefit at the beginning of treatment. Instead, most insurance companies make an initial payment when treatment begins and then continue paying monthly, quarterly, or annually throughout the course of treatment.

Many plans also include a Lifetime Maximum Benefit, which is the maximum amount the insurance company will contribute toward orthodontic treatment over a patient's lifetime. Unlike regular dental benefits that renew each year, this benefit is typically available only once.

Because orthodontic treatment often lasts 18 to 24 months or longer, it's important to keep your dental insurance active throughout treatment whenever possible. If your insurance changes, your remaining benefits may depend on whether your new plan covers orthodontic treatment already in progress.

Are There Age Limits for Orthodontic Insurance?

Some dental insurance plans include age limits for orthodontic benefits, while others provide coverage for both children and adults. Depending on your policy, orthodontic benefits may end at age 18, 19, or 26, while other plans have no age restrictions at all.

If you're considering orthodontic treatment for yourself or an older teenager, it's always a good idea to verify your orthodontic benefits before treatment begins. Our team can help review your insurance coverage and explain how your specific plan applies to braces or Invisalign treatment.
